"Exhibitions Connect Photography, Collage, Textiles to Explore Nature of Truth, Societal Concerns"
2008-08-28 until 2008-10-19
Southwest School of Art and Craft / Russell Hill Rogers Galleries
San Antonio, TX, USA United States of America

Three concurrent exhibitions at the Southwest School of Art and Craft embed photography in other media to ask viewers to consider – what is the truth? – and to comment on social issues such as domestic violence, the origins of Latina identity, and consumer culture.  Guatemalan artist Veronica Riedel will exhibit powerful works that explore the multiple identities of Latina women through mixed media photographs, in a solo exhibition entitled The Making of a Mestiza. She obtained her BA in Photography and Cinematography from the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida.

Zoë Sheehan Saldaña, from Brooklyn, NY, will exhibit works combining photographic and textile techniques in pixilated fiber images. In addition to this solo exhibition, Caution, Saldaña will present a free talk entitled Photographic Interventions on Friday, September 12 at the art school. During her time in San Antonio, she will also teach a PC-based workshop on Sept 12 and 13 at the school which will explore how the tools of digital imaging have irrevocably altered our relationship with “photographic truth.” Saldaña is currently an Assistant Professor of Art at City University of New York/Baruch College. She earned her MFA from Rochester Institute of Technology and a BA from Oberlin College.

Part of FotoseptiembreUSA, the exhibitions by Riedel and Saldaña will open Thursday, August 28, in the Russell Hill Rogers Galleries on the art school’s Navarro Campus, 300 Augusta at Navarro, San Antonio, with a public reception from 5:30-7:30PM. Exhibitions at the art school are free and open to the public, Mon-Sat 9A-5P and Sun 11A-4P on the Navarro Campus.

Also exhibiting at the art school during FotoseptiembreUSA® will be San Antonio artist Jennifer Khosbin. Her intricate works combine drawing, cutting, photography and collaged materials to “dig for truth,” often mixing images of people or creatures with hints of inorganic, manufactured objects, such as advertising or printed text. Khosbin’s exhibit, Missed or Misunderstood, will be in the school’s Ursuline Hall Gallery, on the Ursuline Campus, free and open to the public Mon-Sat 9A-5P.
